Former NUS Lecturer Jailed For Molesting Student On Campus Bus

Long Yun, a former NUS lecturer was sentenced to 14 week’s jail on Oct 17 for molesting a female undergraduate.

According to court documents, Long Yun was standing close to a 20-year-old undergraduate on a shuttle bus on the day of the incident. Long became aroused after the bus jerked forward and caused his groin to rub against the woman’s thigh. Long proceeded to rub himself against her for about four minutes until he alighted from the bus.

The victim was shocked and confused after realising that he was intentionally rubbing her. She immediately informed a friend that she had been molested, and sought assistance from a campus security officer to make a police report.

The 36-year-old Chinese national and Singapore permanent resident pleaded guilty for committing outrage of modesty. The victim’s identity is currently being protected under a court order.

Long, who is married with a young son, worked in the chemical and biomolecular engineering department at NUS at the time. He was promptly fired by NUS after being charged.

In court, the Deputy Public Prosecutor added that the victim remains traumatized and does not take the shuttle bus in NUS any more for fear of being molested.

For molestation, Long could have been jailed up to two years, fined, caned or any combination of the three.

According to police statistics, cases of outrage of modesty have been steadily increasing with 837 reported cases in the first half of 2019 alone. The number of reported cases has also spiked 36 percent since 2016.
